Design Week South Africa – Johannesburg is the Johannesburg edition of Design Week South Africa, a nationwide design platform founded in 2024 by Margot Molyneux with Roland Postma and Zanele Kumalo, held each October as one of the event’s two anchor city programs alongside Cape Town.
Rather than a single trade fair, the Johannesburg program is built from independently run exhibitions, studio visits, walking tours, panel discussions, film screenings and product launches staged across the city’s creative spaces. It is organized around four guiding themes, space sharing, collaborative growth, future archives and game-changing design, with many events offered free to widen access for both visitors and emerging exhibitors. The initiative aims to grow South Africa’s design economy and document its creative output, with funding support that has let independent designers and small businesses run their own programming rather than a centralized showcase.
